Extreme Cold Warning issued January 21 at 9:22AM EST until January 23 at 10:00AM EST by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 30 degreesbelow zero expected.* WHERE...In Maryland, Garrett and Extreme Western AlleganyCounties. In Virginia, Western Highland and Eastern HighlandCounties, and Northern Virginia Blue Ridge and CentralVirginia Blue Ridge. In West Virginia, Western Grant, WesternMineral, Western Pendleton and Eastern Pendleton Counties.* WHEN...Until 10 AM EST Thursday.* IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 belowzero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30minutes. An extended period of freezing temperatures couldcause ruptured water pipes.* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The coldest wind chills are expectedbetween midnight and 9 am late tonight into Wednesday morning.Wear protective clothing such as a hat, face mask and heavygloves or mittens if you have plans to be outdoors. To preventfreezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they shouldbe wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that havein-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
